North Park Square was closed to traffic Tuesday as the movie “Tyson’s Run” filmed a scene involving multiple vehicles and actor Major Dodson of “The Walking Dead” and “American Horror Story.”
The story is about a boy on the autism spectrum training for a marathon in order to connect with his father. The movie is also reported to star Amy Smart of “Varsity Blues” and “The Butterfly Effect,” Barkhad Abdi from “Captain Phillips,” and Rory Cochrane from “CSI: Miami” and “Argo.”
The crew could be seen positioning cars for a street scene and Dodson was being sprayed with what appeared to be a bottle of water to create a sweaty appearance. The actor darted into the street at sound of “Action!”
The movie is written and directed by Kim Bass, who created popular television series “Kenan and Kel” and “Sister, Sister.”
Thanks to the state’s film, television and digital tax credit, Georgia has become one of the top spots to make movies and television programs. Other movies that have filmed scenes in Cobb County include, “I, Tonya,” starring Margot Robbie, “A Bad Moms Christmas,” with Mila Kunis, Ben Stiller’s “The Watch,” and “Game Night,” with Jason Bateman.

Popular teen actor Major Dodson, who has made a name for himself after appearing in well-received television series such as The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and apocalyptic thriller movie named Left Behind (2014), is all set to play a pivotal part in the indie film Tyson’s Run. The movie has been written by famed writer Kim Bass who will direct it as well. Bass, who rose to fame after creating television sitcom Sister, Sister and writing on In Living Color, has previously helmed Junkyard Dog (2010) starring Vivica A. Fox, and action entertainer Kill Speed (2010).
Talking about the storyline of Tyson’s Run, the film revolves around a boy called Tyson who is autistic. He tries everything possible to connect with his father. He even trains himself for a marathon with the defamed former champion. Apart from writing and directing the movie, Bass is also co-producing it with Deanna Shapiro, the former actress, and producer is known for The Legend of Cryin’ Ryan (1998), Day of Days (2017) and Kill Speed (2010). John Cappetta will join the project as executive producer.
Casting for other important character is almost locked, and if all goes well, the makers will take Tyson’s Run to the shooting floor next month.

If Kim Bass looked over from his director’s chair perched on Treasure Island and across the choppy, bright blue San Francisco Bay just a few yards away, he might be able to spot the Ghirardelli Chocolate factory where he used to sling scoops of ice cream. But Bass doesn’t make hot fudge sundaes anymore. The “In Living Color” writer and creator of Nickelodeon’s “Keenan and Kel” makes movies now.
“I started washing dishes,” confessed Bass on a break from filming shots for his latest film “HeadShop,” a comedy-drama that takes place in Oakland. “Then I bused tables, and finally … I got to make the sundaes. I got my paper hat.”
Forty years ago, when he was 20, Bass briefly lived in a rooming house on Polk Street where he slept on the floor until it was his turn to use the lone bed. He served tourists ice cream during the day and dreamed of making movies and television at night. “All I ever wanted to do is tell my stories,” beamed Bass.

SENECA FALLS — In 1979, the late Michael Jackson, who hadn’t yet turned 21, released his wildly popular “Off the Wall” album.
ESPN launched what would turn out to be the most successful cable television network devoted to sports.
Not quite as prominent: Seventh-grader Deanna Shapiro and her family moved from the small town where she was born, Seneca Falls, to California.
Shapiro may not have the name appeal of Jackson or ESPN, but she is making her mark in Hollywood.
Now a producer, she has just entered post-production work on her 10th film, “Day of Days,” a Bass Entertainment Pictures movie featuring veteran actor Tom Skerritt. In addition, she has created her own production company, Beautiful Lie Pictures.
Shapiro estimated that “Day of Days” will take two to three months to finish. The film, based on a true story, follows a day in the life of 91-year-old man shut out from the world and a young Cuban refugee who is working as a home health aide. The film focuses on themes of regret, loss and love that occur during each of their lives.
“Tom was a pleasure to work with and so kind,” Shapiro said during a recent phone interview.
Shapiro said she is shooting for a spot at the Sundance Film Festival and vows not to attend until one of her films is up for an award.
She did receive the Best Independent Film Award at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival 2015 for the drama “A Better Place.”
Shapiro got her movie start as a child actress. She played Tiffany in “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” a movie that featured Sarah Jessica Parker.
Her first film, “The Legend of Cryin’ Ryan,” was based on Seneca Falls. It was filmed there in 1997, the last time Shapiro visited the area. Shapiro shot footage and scenes in her great-grandmother’s house and the cemetery across the street. She also filmed in Fairport, using many local people in the film. She relayed the memory of getting a black eye from playing baseball, a common theme in the movie.
Shapiro’s next project, a western titled “Unbroken,” is still in the casting stage but will be entering production soon.
She said she still has “tons” of family in the Seneca Falls area and hopes to return for a visit sometime in the near future.
The advent of Facebook and social media has allowed Shapiro to reconnect with her former grade-school friends, including former classmate Allison Chiodo. Chiodo, who lives in Waterloo, joined Shapiro on a trip to New York City and recalls what a great time it was reminiscing about the old days.
“It was the first time I’d seen her in years,” Chiodo said. “I’m so proud to know how far she has come and her success as a producer.”
“She’s a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart,” Shapiro said of Chiodo.
Shapiro, who became a grandmother earlier this year, has a son and daughter. When her daughter was in high school she would drop her off at the animal shelter to volunteer. As the weeks progressed, Shapiro said she would go in and stay for hours taking care of the cats.
These days, however, her focus is on finishing her latest film.

Tom Skerritt (Top Gun, Alien, MASH) has completed filming on Bass Entertainment Pictures’ upcoming feature, DAY OF DAYS. Skerritt stars opposite the only other cast member, relative newcomer, Peruvian actress, Claudia Zevallos (A Better Place). The film was primarily shot on a sound stage utilizing a single set. This purposely-austere production is unlike any film Skerritt has worked on before and he is extremely excited to be a part of the inspirational and thought-provoking project.
Inspired by a true story, DAY OF DAYS explores the emotion-filled, day-long, late-in-life selfreflection of Walter Leland (Skerritt), a long-retired city bus driver and WWII veteran. The film examines themes of life, death, faith and self-forgiveness. This was an extraordinarily emotional and demanding role for Skerritt, and is one that he is deeply passionate about. “It’s all about the material,” said Skerritt.
DAY OF DAYS was produced by former Seneca Falls resident Deanna Capone Shapiro of Beautiful Lie Pictures. Shapiro’s last film, “A Better Place”, won the Best Independent Film Award at the 2015 Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. “Junkyard Dog”, another film produced by Shapiro, starring Vivica A. Fox headlined the Women’s International Film Festival in Miami. Among the 10 feature films produced by Shapiro, her first, “The Legend of Cryin’
Ryan”, was filmed in Seneca Falls and Fairport.
Deanna was born in Seneca Falls and attended school there until the family relocated to California in 1979. She is the daughter of Ralph Capone of Waterloo and Peggy Lambert Holder of Seneca Falls.
Day of Days is directed by former Utica resident, Kim Bass (In Living Color, Junkyard Dog, Kill Speed).

(Los Angeles, California–January 19, 2015) Independent fantasy-drama, “A Better Place” has been awarded Best Independent Film in this year’s Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival (HRIFF). Winners were announced today on the festival website.
“I can’t express how mind-blowing it is to have my first film named as the Best Independent Film at HRIFF,” said “A Better Place” Director Dennis Ho.
Additionally, Director Dennis Ho’s first feature film has also been nominated for Best Picture 2015 alongside other nominees “Boyhood,” “Selma,” “Inherent Vice,” “Nightcrawler,” “Citizenfour,” “Cotton,” “Hollywood Streets,” “Spanners,” and “The Ghost and the Whale.” Best Picture winner will be announced at the awards ceremony February 13th.
“To be grouped in the running for Best Picture alongside these stellar films is an honor in itself; I guess we’ll have to wait and see if our little film can hold up against the big boys,” said Dennis Ho.
“A Better Place,” centers upon Jeremy Rollins, a shy and introverted young man with a mysterious and frightening power that has required him to live as a virtual shut-in for most of his life. After the death of his over-protective mother forces him into the world, he must confront – through the lens of his childlike innocence – the realities of a harsh society and the cruelties of the people it produces.

The horror-thriller Bad Behavior, is set for release on DVD on Oct. 22. The film was co-written by Nicholas Brandt ad his partner Lisa Hamil and stars Linda Hamilton (The Terminator), Ted McGinley (Happy Days, Married With Children) and Halle Hirsch (Grey’s Anatomy). THe film centers on babysitter, Zoe (Hirsch), who is left in charge of three children overnight. Zoe’s only concerns seems to be fighting off the romantic advances of teen brothers Tyler and Jack, but things go awry when she suddenly finds herself in a bathroom groggy and confused with only the two youngest kids – Tyler and Grace – with her. While Tyler tries to explain how they got in there, an intruder attempts to break the door in.
Soon Zoe discovers the “intruder” is oldest son Jack, who’s had a psychotic break. Zoe and the kids decide to wait out the night in the bathroom, as they expect their parents back in a few hours. When that help never arrives, they plot and attempt another escape, only to further anger Jack in the process.
“We wanted to be as grounded in reality as possible,” Brandt said of the script. “We did a lot of research into what could happen during a break. Hopefully we’re true to that and we are telling an engaging story.”
Bad Behavior will be available on Netflix and through Amazon.

June 12, 2012 – Mark the day however you must, whether with a notation on your calendar or a tattoo on your forehead, just so long as you remember, from this moment until your last, that most auspicious day on which Kill Speed arrived on DVD.
Sure, you could remember June 12th as the birthday of former United States President George Bush (The First), Russia Day, or World Day Against Child Labor, but do any of those things involve a sexy, hotshot pilot making millions by flying drugs across the border in high-tech planes at damn near the speed of sound?
I should think not. Kill Speed, however, offers just that..
The movie, which hits shelves on DVD today, stars Andrew Keegan as the leader of a group of drug runners whose alternately lavish and high-velocity lifestyle is compromised when both the US government and the competition set out to eliminate their operation. Written and directed by Kim Bass, Kill Speed’s cast also includes Natalia Cigliuti, Brandon Quinn, Nick Carter, Robert Patrick, Greg Grunberg, Innis Casey, Graham Norris, and Bill Goldberg.

Without you realizing it, Kim Bass has probably been a big part of your life. “Sister, Sister,” “Kenan and Kel,” “In Living Color” and more – if you’ve watched these shows, you’ve seen the product of Bass’ writing work. In fact, “Sister, Sister” and “Kenan and Kel” were created by Bass.
Bass loved writing for television, but he also felt that there was something else he wanted to do. “I enjoyed my time,” he said. “Not to be cliche, but I’ve always wanted to direct.”
Just like his career in television was a success, his career as a screenwriter and movie director is also flourishing. “They’ve begun to grow in scope and scale, as well as the budgets they’re allowed,” he said of his films. “As you’re writing [a screenplay], you begin to think, “I can make this,” instead of writing it and selling it to someone else.”
Two of Bass’s films that are about to be released are “Kill Speed” and “Junkyard Dog.” “Junkyard Dog,” starring Vivica A. Fox, Brad Dourif and Innis Casey, tells the unfortunate story of a girl who is abducted by a person whom she believed to be a tow truck driver. The basis for this psychological thriller, said Bass comes from several different stories.
“In Syracuse, New York, there was a “Dungeon Master” who kidnapped his first womanÐI think she was 14 years oldÐand from 1988 to 2003, he would kidnap women and assault them on a daily basis, make them read the Bible, dance with him, just a lot of bizarre stuff,” he said. “There’s another story of a girl who I believe was 18 years old in Texas. The last time her parents ever saw her was when a tow truck pulled up along the side of the road. And in Europe, there was a story of a man with a bunker-slash-container that he built, and he would catch guys and consume them.”
The film also has some personal stories attached to it, such as the night a friend of his called him. “A young friend of mine called me one night,” he said. “Her car had broken down in an unsavory area, and she was calling me so I could keep her company until the tow truck driver arrived. I asked her, ‘Where are you?’ and went out to stay with her until the truck came. I was thinking, ‘You’re gonna wait out here in an unsavory neighborhood in the middle of the night for a tow truck driver, and you’re going to get in his truck and you don’t know who this guy is. So, I stayed out there with her and sure enough, the tow truck driver looked scary.”
Another story involves Bass’s upbringing. “I have four sisters and I would always worry about them when they would go out. I remember my father telling me, ‘You never give the car to your sisters with an empty tank of gas.’ I was told ‘Look out for your sisters, your mother, your grandmother.’ The film kinda has a message, which is you don’t want to be afraid of people, but you want to be aware and you don’t want to put yourself in a situation where something can happen to you. You want to be responsible. It’s a bit irresponsible to be driving around in your car at night with little gas.”
“Kill Speed,” a “Fast and the Furious”-type film about young pilots who decide to live the jet-set life through drug trafficking, stars Andrew Keegan, Brandon Quinn and Nick Carter. This film also has a real life story as its basis. “There was an article about an airplane pilot who had 300 pounds of cocaine in his plane,” he said. Bass, also a pilot, also cited some flying statistics. “One thing people don’t realize is that there are about 600 commercial airports being used by the commercial airlines, but there are 6000 airports, so if you have a small plane, you can go wherever you want. Since these drug planes are stolen sometimes, they buy them at auction. They are a very quick way to move drugs around.
“I thought, ‘How easy would it be for some kids to get these souped-up, modified planes that go 300 miles per hour?'” he said. “So in the film, these kids make their money by delivering the drugs. 100 pounds of crystal meth is about $300,000 on the street. So these kids are buying houses, cars, all by delivering drugs.”
Bass lauds the talent he had for both films as being professionals who wanted to do their best work. “If you treat them like professionals, they’ll treat you like a professional,” he said. “They were pleasures to work with.”
Also, the actors in both films do a lot of their own stunts in the films. “Innis Casey, who plays the villain in ‘Junkyard Dog,’ is a really nice guy,” he said. “He’s also a method actor; he really channeled his character so well, and he remained in character the whole time we were shooting in Tennessee. So when we would go to dinner, he’d still be in character and it’d be really creepy. But he’s fantastic.”
“Nick Carter doesn’t particularly like flying, but he said ‘I’ll do it since we’re going to be doing a flying movie,'” he said when talking about Carter’s involvement in “Kill Speed.” “The actors actually flew and did their acting flying,” he said. “They were going between 300-500 miles per hour. That was kinda the first time that’d been done. It’s all real. They were all troopers.”
Bass has another film going into production soon-Western film “The UnBroken,” which will start filming very soon. What Bass hopes happens for all of his films is for them to find a loving audience. “I really just hope these pictures find an audience and that the audience finds these pictures.” He said. “They’ll be pleasantly surprised.”
“Junkyard Dog” will be released May 15 and “Kill Speed” will be released June 12.

Excerpt from interview –
AX: What can you tell me about your new movie you just shot RIGHT NEXT DOOR?
HAMILTON: It has a wonderfully crafted story. I loved the writing and the way the story was crafted. It’s a character study as much as it is a psychological thriller. I felt I really had to participate because of the writers’ and directors’ great effort. I was a really big fan of the script. Sometimes, it’s not even about the character one is playing, as it is really wanting to be a part of something. This story goes in directions that are so antithetical to the way films are done with huge body counts and bloody bits. This one is a finely tuned character study that went in a completely unexpected direction.

Piracy, a filmmaker’s worst nightmare, has thrust independent film writer-director Kim Bass’ Kill Speed into the limelight and to a #5 action movie ranking on IMDB right behind Red, Jackass 3D, Inception and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Kill Speed is ranked an impressive #15 overall in awareness this week according to IMDB.
It’s rare for an indie film to shoot to the top of a list that is normally reserved for major studio blockbusters but defying all odds that is exactly what Kill Speed has done.
Newly released internationally, and repped by Epic Pictures Group worldwide, Kill Speed is a high-octane, youth-oriented, “Fast & Furious” meets “Top Gun” type tale about Hollywood bad-boys, who use high-tech experimental planes to deliver crystal meth throughout Southern California in order to fund their live-fast, die-hard, rock star lifestyle. Soundtrack features Steppenwolf, Nick Carter and Wicked Wisdom with Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Take it from us: there’s not one moment where you won’t be sucked in by this action-fest!”- Network Video.com
Award-Winning writer turned director Kim Bass commented, “Cleary Kill Speed has been downloaded several million times potentially costing Bass Entertainment Pictures millions of dollars in lost revenue. We became aware of the pirating just two weeks ago. There are thousands of bit torrent sites offering illegal downloads of the film. As of this Monday the IMDB Starmeter for Kill Speed jumped an astonishing 32,592%. With that kind of an accelerated vertical climb to the top we knew something extraordinary was up.”
“Film pirates are not predators but parasites. They do not roam around looking for new and unknown films to eat, but rather prey on big films with name recognition… this is more bad news for independent filmmakers.” – Slate.com
Refusing to let the fear of future piracy be a deterrent, Bass is moving forward with the release of his highly anticipated, gritty psychological-thriller, Junkyard Dog, staring Vivica A. Fox and Brad Dourif. Recently featured at the 2010 Women’s International Film and Arts Festival in Miami, Florida to critical acclaim, “Sinister, thrilling, and the dramatic style of Junkyard Dog quickly comes through…” – 28 Days Later. Junkyard Dog, also represented internationally by Epic Pictures, produced by Bass Entertainment Pictures in conjunction with Digital Jungle Pictures and In The Light Entertainment, will have a special event, theatrical release at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville Tennessee on November 21, 2010.
